Blue Moon Placemats



Learn how to make a Judy Niemeyer project! This one-day class will acquaint you to paper piecing with Quiltworx patterns. 

We will be making the Blue Moon Placemats, and the pattern will be available in our store. Be sure to do your "homework" before coming to class!


Required Pattern: Blue Moon Placemats by Quiltworx.com (available at Kaleidoscope)
• Fabric requirements:
B2-1: 1/2 yd (18”) for Skinny Spike Background
B2-2: 1/4 yd (or 5”) each of (5) fabrics for Skinny Spikes
D1-1: 1-1/2 yd (54”) for Wide Spike Background
D1-2: 1/2 yd (or 16”) for Wide Spikes (used 4 times in each unit)
D1-3: 1/2 yd (or 16”) for Wide Spikes (used 3 times in each unit)
Binding: 7/8 yd (needed to finish, but not in class)
Backing: 2-1/4 yd (needed to finish, but not in class)
Sewing machine in good working order, fitted with your 1/4-inch piecing foot
• Notions:
Two rulers: one long ruler (18-24” recommended) and one smaller (12” or so)
Curved Ruler (Quiltworx Judy’s Mini Arcs Ruler Set, Simple Curves Ruler, or similar), optional for trimming
curves
12” Add-a-Quarter Ruler
2-3” x 12” piece of Template Plastic
Rotary Cutter with a fresh blade
Cutting Mat
Pressing Mat and Small Iron
50 wt Thread and Bobbin
Size 70-80 needle (Microtex Sharp recommended)
Small Scissors for trimming threads
Paper Cutting Scissors
Flowerhead Pins or other long, thin pins
Pen, Paper and highlighter for taking notes
Seam Ripper
Scotch Tape
Jumbo Paper Clips (about 30)
3 Ziplock Bags, gallon size
Fabric Glue Pen (Sewline, Fons & Porter, or similar)
Scotch Repositionable (Restickable) Glue Stick – Note that some other brands are only repositionable for a
certain amount of time, such as 5 minutes, before drying. You DO NOT want that type of glue stick.
Purple Thang or Stiletto
Sharpie Marker, any color except black
Acorn Easy Press Pen (comes empty) w/Acorn Easy Press Fabric Treatment Refill (optional)
Tweezers (optional)
3-Ring binder (1/2” or 1”) and Sheet Protectors (optional for storing pattern)

Pattern:
• If desired, take apart your pattern booklet and place each sheet into a Sheet
Protector and insert the pages into a 3-Ring Binder
Ziplock Bags:
• You need 3 Gallon sized Ziplock Bags for this project. You should label the
bags as follows:
o Block Group Bag Unit B2
o Template Bag
o Block Group Bag Unit D1

Fabric Preparation:
• You should label your fabric with its designation as you cut it into strips. You can use sticky labels or simply use
strips of paper that you pin or tape to the fabric.
B2-1: 1/2 yd (18”) for Skinny Spike Background - Cut into (3) 6” strips
B2-2: 1/4 yd (or 5”) each of (5) fabrics for Skinny Spikes - Cut each into (2) 2-1/2” strips
o Decide what order you want the (5) fabrics placed in, and label them with a designation of B2-2:a, B2-
2:b, B2-2:c, B2-2:d, and B2-2:e, working clockwise (left to right).
D1-1: 1-1/2 yd (54”) for Wide Spike Background - Cut into (3) 18” strips
D1-2: 1/2 yd (or 16”) for Wide Spikes - Cut into (2) 8” strips
D1-3: 1/2 yd (or 16”) for Wide Spikes, Cut into (2) 8” strips


Please note: Classroom area is upstairs and our staff will carry your machine up for you. Please have all homework completed prior to class.
